If you can only read the first sentences, make the time to read the next one, NOW! My newest toy, the Novatel MiFi 2200 from Virgin Mobile, has completely solved my internet connectivity issues while away from San Juan. This little gray box, just a bit bigger than a credit card and about a ¼” wide, converts the 3G signal from Sprint PCS’s network into a Wi-Fi signal capable of connecting 5 devices to the internet.
At the moment, you can buy one of these units at Radio Shack , Best Buy Wal-Mart, or a Sprint PCS store for $150+tax, and then for $40 for 30 days, you get unlimited bandwidth and Sprint 3G speeds, all without a contract. Allow me to repeat this: $40 a month (give or take) for unlimited bandwidth that you can share with 5 devices, and no contract! For those of you that don’t need unlimited bandwidth, Virgin Mobile also offers 100mb of bandwidth for $10 over 10 days.
Earlier I mentioned that I have internet connectivity issues while outside San Juan. DMAX is awful where I live, offering an unreliable signal and mediocre customer service; whereas the local cable co, Choice Cable, has terrible customer service that makes me wish for the “quality” of Onelink’s service (US readers: think of Comcast). This has left me with the choice of freeloading from the Marriott in Ramey and the local UPR and Inter campuses, or doing personal work and class work from the office. The first choice is a bit embarrassing to me and the second alternative is risky. When I first heard about the Virgin Mobile MiFi and $40 unlimited plan through Gadling.com , I decided to take a risk and buy it.
And now for the review: To be frank, the speeds can vary. During “Hurricane Earl” I was able to test the device in my parent’s house in Guaynabo. Inside a brick building, I was able to get 1 bar of service, reaching 300kbps upload and 110kbps downloads, which is acceptable for during a hurricane, but nothing to write home about. Because of the portability of the unit, I am able to place it where it can get a stronger signal. I am certain that if there wasn’t a rainstorm, I could have placed the unit closer to a window. However I’m not in the mood to risk a $150 sacrifice to find out. However, when I connected from my apartment in Aguadilla, I was able to place the unit next to a window. Immediately things improved! I got 5 bars of service, receiving 900kbps downloads and 1.1mbps upload. To translate this into a real world scenario, I downloaded a 350mb file through bittorrent in 15 minutes while listening to Pandora and surfing the web rather quickly! All of this from a little gray box that fits in my pocket. There are even reports of people getting 2mbps bursts in the mainland US!
