Amazon Sells Nokia E71x for a Penny
The smart phone has a full keyboard, voice-guided GPS, digital camera and Web browser, and Nokia says it is the slimmest Qwerty smart phone on the market.
Since last week, AT&T has sold it for $100 with a rebate and two-year contract. It went on sale at Amazon two weeks ago, a spokeswoman said, and also requires an AT&T plan to get the discounted price (its list price there is $399.99). The online retailer regularly sells cellphones for a penny, but the E71x offer also includes a $36 activation-fee credit that ends Monday. “The phone is doing very well,” she said.
AT&T said the Amazon sale isn’t tied to its promotion, which begins airing this weekend. The E71x has been a hot topic on gadget blogs for months — Boy Genius Report published early photos of the handset in November, saying “There it is people, looking sexy as ever.”
Though the biggest cellphone maker in the world by sales, Nokia has little market-share in the U.S. It has been trying for years to raise its profile in this country and is now under pressure to show its lineup can compete with smart phones such as Research In Motion’s BlackBerry.
